Lá na nAithreacha – Happy Father's Day
BLOOMSDAY TONIGHT – The day of the week for that very first Bloomsday in June 1904 was Thursday. So, your Portland Hibernians are hosting an evening of the written word from Irish writers this Thursday, June 18 at Kells Restaurant. ”The theme is nature, both fauna and flora and/or human nature. As long as it is from an Irish author, it works.” Hibernian Erin Walsh, organizer of this evening’s celebration. 112 SW 2nd Ave Portland. No host dinner at Six P.M. Readings at Seven.
Dublin-born writer and director Gemma Whelan will read from Ulysses.
“The locale was Celtic and his season spring.”
From the PHS website 1 - The words of the federal judge who decided Ulysses wasn’t obscene and wrote the most-read ruling in U.S. history.Click here to read about the Woodrow Wilson-appointed judge who overruled the censors and changed America.
What James Joyce’s dad was like
From the PHS website II - A careful reading of his books will give you a glimpse of the true nature of John Stanislaus Joyce, father of the author. Pity the mother.Read here why, while others thought poorly of the man, James Joyce loved his father.
Not this year. Troy Parrot of the Ireland Mens National Football Team. See you at Euro 2027?
World Cup - What’s an Irish fan to do?
If you’ve gotten over the fact that nations smaller than Ireland qualified for the World Cup, you might want to pick one of those teams to follow and perchance support. (The US Mens National Team didn’t look like an underdog Friday night.) That was Tom O’Leary’s brilliant brainstorm and choosing a squad was easy. Here’s the Oregonian story on bringing Ivory Coast to NE Alberta. Or there’s the team from Cape Verde. Good Story. One of their heroes is a Dublin native who captains the Shamrock Rovers in the Irish League. TRIVIA. Only one nation with a smaller population than Cape Verde’s has ever qualified for the World Cup. Which nation? Clue. Change one letter from Ireland.
Bandon, Oregon. Bandon, Ireland.
On Bloomsday in Salem, members of the Oregon-Ireland Sister State Committee met for the first time. Hibernian Brian Doherty was elected Chairman of the Committee. Hibernian Marco Oswald announced a sister city relationship (called a twinning in Ireland) is bringing together Bandon in Southern Oregon and Bandon in County Cork. DETAILS TO COME IN THE PDX HI. In the meantime, here’s the background on this committee from our website.
Coming soon to America? Maybe. And Beamish Stout too.
Move over Guinness here comes Murphys Irish Stout
The presence of Murphys Irish Stout in America has faded like its logo on the pint in the picture. It’s also faded in Ireland, where Guinness has a virtual monopoly on Irish stout. Except in Cork. Which is where Murphys is brewed. There’s news that Heineken, which owns Murphys, is making plans to sell it in the States. The sister stout is Beamish. It’s being pitched to younger drinkers at fifty cents less per pint.
